In many Texas school districts, teachers are turning to iPads to help with classroom education. But as Carlos Morales of KUT News and ReportingTexas.com reports, educators are still trying to determine how best to use the technology.

So says a recent report published by the National Education Policy Center out of the University of Colorado at Boulder. Political rhetoric from charter schools advocates often claim how charter schools can do more for students with less money as a reason to expand. The study looked at charter school finances in Texas where evidence indicates programs like the Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP) spend significantly more per pupil than city ISDs serving similar student populations.
The Star-Telegram Extra Credit blog has post that provides some additional background.

Presidential election years provide opportunities for students to engage in learning experiences that make real time connections between themselves and their government. Below is an infographic that illustrates the demographic make-up of congress compared to the overall U.S. population. The graphic is very accessible for students at varying reading and linguistic levels. Clear distinctions are between members of congress and the people they represent. The graphic begs an answer to why the information presented matters to people living in the United States. Using this infographic as an anchor source, a learning experience can take the form of a debate, written reflection, student generated polling, a position paper, or a problem-solution presentation.

Innovate, collaborate, problem-solve, create and problem solve real world issues are some of the words currently used to characterize what teaching and learning should look like in the future. There is currently a plethora of ideas on how to best provide learning experience that engage students in this type of work. There is a common thread amongst them - Educational Techonolgy. Today’s announcement about edX, a joint venture between MIT and Harvard to provide free online courses for students around the world, is a good example.
The Flipped Classroom is an approach that is being experimented in some classrooms across the nation. Essentially, the model switches the presentation of content to homework while classroom time is dedicated to concept development.
Below is an infographic that provides a synopsis of the model.

We wrote about the debate and consequent fallout surrounding the adoption of the 2010 social studies standards (TEKS). Scott Thurman, a film student at the University of North Texas, made a documentary that, according to the film’s web page, “ follows the rise and fall of some of the most controversial figures in American education through some of their most tumultuous intellectual battles.” The aptly titled The Revisionaries has been screened as part of several film festivals around the country, including several screenings at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.
